Cambodia’s ACC Men’s Challenger Cup campaign ended in controversial style when visa problems meant they couldn’t field a full team for their Singapore encounter. That meant Cambodia had to withdraw from their matches in the tournament, leaving Indonesia and Uzbekistan to progress from their group.
Tournament local reports said three Cambodian players were rejected entry visas when arriving in Singapore. The precise reason for the refusal of visas is not made public. This was compounded when one of the players injured himself again and with their squad reduced below the levels needed to play in competition.
There were consequential forfeitures that changed the face of competition. While Cambodia were unable to take part, it meant that Indonesia and Uzbekistan progressed to the quarter-finals without playing their remaining group-stage games. With the tournament involving ten teams, of which eight will qualify for the knockout stage, Cambodia dropping out has a key role to play in deciding group results.
While the country became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) back in 2022 but still trying to be recognized as a more developed cricket-playing nation. The attention of the country had pivoted on their cricket team during the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh when they won gold medals in several formats, T20 and even a weeks long tournament50 over their there.
But that success came with a heap of controversy. Much of Cambodia’s squad was made up of naturalised players from the Indian and Pakistani diaspora who were granted Cambodian nationality just before the tournament. The approval of citizenships and the subsequent eligibility process drew flak from various cricket observers and competing nations.
Malaysia, who were runners-up to Cambodia in the T20 final of the recently-held Southeast Asian Games set up a protest against late changes in its squad. The controversy raised questions around player eligibility and rules in tournament across the region.
In the ACC Men’s Challenger Cup, the other groups were in action. Singapore, Maldives advance to the quarter-finals of another tight-pacing group, Myanmar eliminated narrowly.
The removal of Cambodia shows the significance in travel documentation and player presence regarding international sports events where issues of administration can have a material effect on results and advancement in competitions.
