Cooper Connolly produced the innings of his life to help Australia avoid a series whitewash against Bangladesh with an emotional one-wicket win in Dhaka.
Australia was under pressure in chase of a competitive target of 275 losing wickets at regular intervals. Bangladesh found renewed life as their bowlers continued to do damage at one end, but Connolly held his ground, offering a veritable masterclass in calming presence and red inked stroke-making. The left-hander dug in, answering the twin challenge of both the opposition attack and oppressive heat well enough to score a magnificent 149 off 134 deliveries.
Though Connolly knuckled down to combine elegant drives with powerful hitting. He was ultimately delivered to right the ship for Australia when it desperately needed someone, struck 13 fours and sixes. Having earlier hit an impressive three sixes in a row towards the end of the encounter, at one point he appeared to be steering his side home to victory with ease.
It was a more remarkable innings still considering that Connolly battled through extreme cramp in the sweltering heat of Dhaka. He was in obvious discomfort and seemed unconvincing at times to the point where he needed a sledgy T-shirt style in cartoon form, but even after wickets fell around him, he refused to quit batting for well over 40 overs. This single handedly kept Australia within reach and swung the momentum from Bangladesh.
But disaster struck for the Australian team late in the piece when Connolly was dismissed just before the end of play, and a last-gasp batting collapse saw Australia lose four wickets to close out their innings. Bangladesh saw a chance for a historical clean sweep but in the last over, India held its nerve to seal the chase with three balls to spare.
Bangladesh set a stiff target of 274 on the back of crucial contributions from their middle-order. Shoriful Islam bowed exceptionally well delivering a spell it almost enviable made the home team into victory and the bowlers also produced in spirit effort.
Even though Australia lost the series, Connolly’s astonishing innings will buy some confidence. The 22-year-old played an innings to win the match, certainly a demonstration of his ability at such a young age but perhaps more widespread recognition he performed in front of enormous pressure and reached one of cricket’s key performance indicators on the international stage.
