Nathan Lyon Determined to Make Strong Comeback After Injury Setback

Nathan Lyon, Australia’s veteran off-spinner, is set to undergo another major rehab and yet more surgery on his bowing leg but remains determined to return in international colours. The seasoned bowler, a proven workhorse and team person, is currently undergoing rehabilitation with the hope of returning functionally fit to play an important role for Australia’s Test side.

Lyon sustained the injury playing for Australia in the Ashes series against England (AFP or licensors) Lyon suffered the injury during Australia’s recent Test series against England, with an operation followed by a long rehabilitation period. The setback came at a cruel time in his career, but the 38-year-old appears to have lost none if his drive. Instead, he has welcomed the challenge and is hellbent on winning his place in the national team back.

Lyon, who has returned from serious injury previously, knows the physical and psychological toll of rehabbing. He returned from a calf injury earlier in the year and that proved he could come back from difficult situations, a trait he feels will prepare him as he recovers this time. Lyon is still very much involved with progressing the Australian side and has goals of returning to Test cricket by October 2023, sources close to him have indicated.

The off-spinner is among the most prolific Australian Test bowlers of the past decade, amassing more than 500 scalps and becoming one of Australia’s greatest spin bowlers. He has become a mainstay of Australia’s red-ball success with his experience, control and wealth of character in clutchtime.

Australian teammates have also had faith in Lyon’s resolve. Pace man Mitchell Starc, who has played alongside Lyon for years, recently endorsed the veteran spinner’s ability to come again from another bout of rehab now that he knows what it takes to be successful his hunger and hard work have been evident throughout his career. Starc added that Lyon still had a burning ambition to play at the highest level and was determined to don the Australian shirt next.

A confirmed return date has yet to be set for Lyon, who continues to put a strong focus on recovery. Going by his history of comebacks, Australia’s spin spearhead has a shot at showing that passion and experience can give something tough as old boots the beat down it needs
