In the opening game of Group F, Sweden sent out one of the warnings from hosts Australia with an impressive 5-1 victory over Tunisia. That said, the Scandinavian side was all business going forward as they displayed clinical finishing with a combination of pace and creativity to achieve one of the competition’s most convincing defeats thus far.
The game started off at breakneck speed, with Sweden taking the early initiative and trying to dictate how the match was played. Midfielder Yasin Ayari punished an error at the back with the perfect start to find his opening goal of the tournament. Sweden pressed on, and the high press rewarded the later leading team again when Alexander Isak punishingly concluded a speedy counterattack to make it 2–0 shortly before halftime.
Omar Rekik offered slight hope for Tunisia when he headed home to close the gap. But Sweden kept their heads and were soon thoroughly back on top. The attacking troika were menacing for the Tunisian rearguard, exposing spaces on transitions and playing off each other well.
For all the home side’s dominance in the first half, Sweden were a completely different team after the break. Completing the rout was Viktor Gyökeres, who scored after clever play with Isak, whilst Mattias Svanberg, also off the bench, sealed a convincing scoreline which survived a VAR check. Ayari capped a superb showing with a thunderbolt from 25 yards to register his second of the match to put the icing on this one-sided contest at 5-1.
Tunisia were among the harder teams to break down before this tournament, so Sweden’s victory was that little bit more impressive. The North African side had made it through qualification with a reputation for defensive rigour but they could not handle Sweden’s incessant attacking pressure and swift interplay.
Now Sweden are sitting pretty within Group F and confidence has been restored ahead of their remaining fixtures. Tunisia, meanwhile, face an uphill battle to preserve their hopes of reaching the knockout stage after this heavy defeat. Sweden will hope to continue building on that momentum as they progress in the World Cup.
