Although the Pakistan women’s cricket team was handed a heavy defeat by India in their opening match of ICC Women T20 World Cup 2026, head coach Wahab Riaz is positive about his side competing in the tournament.
At Edgbaston, Pakistan couldn’t stay with a powerful India side and collapsed by 89 runs. India managed to post a pretty competitive total after bouncing back from an early blow, while Pakistan fell behind at the later end of their chase. Pakistan’s bowling attack, powered by a composed spin display, never allowed Pakistan to threaten the total.
Wahab Riaz remained positive in defeat as his playing XI was told to continue playing a bold and aggressive style of cricket. The coach felt the team demonstrated green shoots in patches of the match, especially during their run chase early on. But key moments lost and partnerships not made ultimately cost dear.
Riaz stressed that an initial loss necessarily shapes the trajectory of a tournament campaign. He felt Pakistan had enough talent and strength of character to recover from the disappointment in the remaining group-stage matches. The ex-fast bowler has repeatedly challenged his players to play with freedom and go for aggressive approach irrespective of the opposition.
Another area discussed was getting better at capitalizing on mistakes made by the opposition, and executing well in clutch situations. Pakistan now look forward to their matches ahead, where to remain in the contention for semi-finals they have to win. They know, with a few challenging matches still to come, that they need a rapid reaction and fast.
The massive win was just what India needed for the World Cup and put the hosts in a rock-solid position in Group 2. For Pakistan, it will be up to regroup and enforce the lessons of this defeat into stronger doings for his or her upcoming matches.
Though India enjoyed a 5-0 lead on the scoreboard, Pakistan’s camp believes they still have a long way to go in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
